Chinese shadow puppetry (皮影戏) originated during the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), making it one of the world's oldest continuous theatrical art forms. According to legend, a court official created shadow figures to console Emperor Wu after the death of his favorite concubine. The art spread along the Silk Road, influencing shadow theater traditions across Central Asia, India, and Southeast Asia. By the Song dynasty (960–1279), shadow puppetry had become a mainstream entertainment form with professional troupes performing in theaters, teahouses, and temples.
In 2011, UNESCO inscribed Chinese shadow puppetry on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The art form preserves folk stories, moral teachings, and historical narratives passed down through generations.
